Wall sconces bring a variety of styles, shapes and functions to the walls of the modern home. Serving two purposes, wall sconces illuminate the surrounding area and save space by mounting to the wall. Sconces help declutter the space, creating a sleek and orderly look in the home whether mounted near the front or back door, down the hall or in a foyer. When placed near the front door, they are often the first thing friends, family and guests see when coming to the home, providing a statement-worthy view and perhaps a conversation starter. Mid-century modern wall sconces bring a throwback charm to the space, while farmhouse, coastal or industrial themed sconces elevate homes with those décor styles. In general, a mid-century modern wall light will brighten the décor and appeal of a room. In larger rooms, wall sconces can complement the existing light, adding a small touch such as by a fireplace to accent the ambiance. Outdoor wall sconces can bring attention to patios and decks or garden formations.
Other Considerations
As with any fixture, such as modern chandeliers, ensure the proper measurements are noted so that it fits within the room desired. A contemporary wall sconce too small or too big will stand out and clash with the current fixtures in the room, interrupting the sense of flow and gracefulness. The height, width and depth (from the wall) need to be considered to have an adequate look. When mounting outdoors, check for the rating, whether wet or damp to determine if the sconce can be directly exposed to water or only indirectly. In some parts of the country, Dark Sky compliance must be met, so check if the fixture meets that as well. Plug in wall sconces are an alternative as well, providing a cord that plugs into any outlet nearby. The draped cord can lend a certain look to the home, rather than the hardwired cordless variety.
When mounting modern sconces in a hallway where natural light is not in abundance, remember to consider not only where the light shines but also how many lights there are. Some sconces bring an uplight to the space and others a downlight, and some bring both.
