Scandinavian Floor Lamps

Scandinavian style has its origins at the end of World War II, when the Nordic countries of Sweden Finland, Norway and especially Denmark were at the height of social democracy. Clean lines and functionality are the mark of Scandinavian design while showcasing evocative shapes drawn from nature. Scandinavian floor lamps are the same, having clean lines and simple silhouettes. They come from the same period as mid-century modern floor lamps, with the American equivalent sometimes sharing the same qualities. Also called Nordic floor lamps, these fixtures are designed to command the room by presenting a full layer of light to the entire space, although some can be used as task lamps.

Other Considerations

Before purchasing the desired floor lamp, check the measurements and ensure it works well in the space, giving plenty of room to breathe while providing the necessary layer of light. Floor lamps come in many sizes and shapes, so it is important to make sure the one in mind works for the room. If placing the floor lamp outside, such as under a covered patio in an inviting social area, make sure to check the location rating to see if it is wet or damp rated. A wet rating means it can be directly exposed to water, while a damp rating means it can only be in the same location as water, but not in contact. Depending on where one lives, Dark Sky compliance may be in effect, so check if the unit meets the requirements for outdoor lighting.

If the floor lamp does work out well, consider adding more of the same design such as Scandinavian table lamps. Many floor lamps have a table lamp equivalent as a smaller version. This can add flow to the décor with matching pieces, and also add a welcoming accent light to the space for areas that might be harder to reach with the full glow of the floor lamp. For either the table lamp or floor lamp, see if they can be dimmed. Often a dimmable fixture is more appealing because the mood and tone of the room can become brighter or warmer, depending on time of day or the events of the day.
