The FLOS Story
Founded in 1962, FLOS is an Italian design company started by brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and Tobia Scarpa in Merano, northern Italy. Experimenting in new techniques, they created contemporary lighting fixtures with artistic verve, making design history with their unique cocoon-like fixtures created by spraying resin over a steel structure. Today, FLOS exports to more than 80 countries and has stores in Rome, Milan, Paris, New York and more.
Why We Love FLOS Lighting
FLOS light fixtures are high concept, quality Italian lighting fixtures that serve as works of art, some of which have even become icons in the contemporary lighting field. FLOS has its own ‘flosophy,’ design guidelines that inform everything made by the company. Believing light is more than just a basic need, FLOS uses experimentation, intuition and having fun to define and stand apart from the competition. The company is built upon the strong concepts of international designers Patricia Urquiola, Paolo Rizzatto, Philippe Starck and more, giving it a unique and iconic history.
Fun Facts About FLOS
FLOS has joined the past with the present, lighting holy sites in Italy like the Church Castelferretti, the Duomo Cremona, and the Basilica S. Clemente with modern suspensions and pendants. FLOS' products are commonly featured in television and movies as well, such as the Arco Lamp seen in Diamonds are Forever and The Italian Job.
Noteworthy Lighting from FLOS
Featured in the Museum of Modern Art of New York, the Castiglioni's Arco Floor Lamp is an iconic piece of modern design with noticeable mid-century flair. The Taccia Table Lamp challenges perspective by giving the illusion of an upside-down hanging lamp. Recently celebrating its 50 year anniversary, the Parentesi Suspension is an adjustable lamp that connects from floor to ceiling with a steel cable.
FLOS is the recipient of many awards over its history. The Arrangments Collection won the Compasso d'Oro Award (2020). Part light sculpture, part industrial design, Arrangements is a geometric modular lighting system. The Coordinates Collection won the Nycx Design Award (2021). The collection is a series of horizontal and vertical strip lights that form an elegant, grid-like luminaire. The Noctambule Collection won the Interior Design's Best of Year Award - Chandelier Lighting (2019). Noctambule consists of clear glass cylinders that appear to lie dormant until magically illuminated.

This halogen floor lamp boasts a unique design, with illumination emanating from the column base and diffused light softly glowing through the top via an incandescent bulb. Each bulb operates independently, controlled by separate switches for customizable lighting. Finished with silver, the metallic base ensures stability, while the halogen source emits diffused and reflected light. Castiglioni's design ethos, inspired by everyday materials, shines through in this minimalist masterpiece, epitomizing his "less is more" philosophy.

Bulb shapes are denoted with a letter, which describes the shape, and a number, which indicates the size. The number indicates the diameter of the light bulb at its widest part in eighths of an inch.Base
