The Patricia Urquiola Story
Born in northern Spain, Patricia Urquiola initially trained in architecture in Madrid. But she has spent the majority of her educational and professional career as a product designer in Italy. She trained under and worked with such renowned Italian designers as Achille Castiglioni and Vico Magistretti. In the early 1990s, while designing furniture with Urquiola at the De Padova furniture company, Magistretti encouraged her to always aspire to the highest professional standards at a worldwide level. Taking such advice to heart, it is to this level that Urquiola continually aims.
Why We Love Patricia Urquiola
Having spent most of her career working in collaboration with other designers, it only makes sense that Patricia Urquiola’s design philosophy revolves around creating environments that encourage positive feelings and gathering together. From furniture to lighting, she conceives every object she designs as part of a domestic landscape, rather than as an individual piece. Striking a balance between technical superiority and public taste, Patricia Urquiola designs reflect a slightly formal quality, but one that also evokes a certain sense of cozy domesticity.
Noteworthy Products From Urquiola
In terms of product design, Urquiola is perhaps best known for her furniture designs for Moroso, B&B Italia and Kartell. She has also created various other lighting, furniture and jewelry designs for Agape, Alessi, Driade, Foscarini, and FLOS, just to name a few.
Particularly exemplary of her highly imaginative yet pragmatic style are the curvaceous and technically innovative Chasen 2 Suspension for Flos and the immediately recognizable, jewel-like Caboche collection for Foscarini (in collaboration with Eliana Gerotto).
In Her Own Words
When it comes to how Urquiola works, "I’m quite ecletic, varied and diverse. I like to think in different scales at the same time, in architecture and design. I’m interested in behavior structures, artisan techniques, certain aspects of memory...aspects of my life."
