Finnish designer Alvar Aalto was renowned for his blending of Scandinavian craft with Bauhaus efficiency and a love of nature. This is perfectly illustrated by Armchair No. 41, designed for the Paimio Sanatorium in 1930. Simple and efficiently constructed, it pairs a plywood seat (with rolled ends that function as springs) with a laminate frame.
