The Vico Magistretti Story
Ludovico Magistretti was born in 1920 in Milan to a family of architects. He studied architecture at Milan Polytechnic and, after graduating in 1945, began working in his father's architectural firm. Being involved in reconstruction projects in post-war Italy gave Magistretti his focus on simplicity ("less is more"), rationality and quality in all the buildings, lighting and furniture he was to design over the next several decades. Today, Magistretti is recognized as one of the founding fathers of Italian Design, that golden age during the mid-20th century.

Over the 60 years that his career extended, Vico Magistretti had his hand in the design of a great many architectural projects, modern lighting pieces and home furnishings. He also formed firm opinions about what design should do. Basically, he believed that a well-designed lamp or chair should do its job and do it well for a long time, without the addition of a lot of distracting and wasteful details. In his mind, a simple form was what gave a piece a sense of timelessness, which was then backed up by quality materials and construction methods. No doubt this is why so many of Magistretti's original designs are still around today.

Noteworthy Products by Vico Magistretti
The Eclisse Table Lamp was one of the first lamps Magistretti designed for Artemide. Its unique rotating shade design garnered the lamp the Compasso d'Oro award in 1967. With its elegant and ergonomic tapered silhouette and extensive range of colors, the Maui Chair collection by Kartell embodies Magistretti's focus on practicality and versatility. Since its release in 2005, it has become a favorite choice for public seating areas, as well as in the home.
