Key Features
Jean Prouve is best known for his angular sheet steel furniture. However, when he designed the Vitra Table Solvay for the Solvay chemical company in 1941, Prouve used mostly solid wood (out of necessity due to metal shortages during WWII), with a central Black steel strut. The result is just as beautifully sculptural and structurally sound as his mostly steel pieces.
Founded in Switzerland in 1950, Vitra produces intelligent and inspiring furniture and accessories for the home, office and other public spaces. Ever mindful of the importance of sustainability in design, Vitra creates furnishings with high quality and versatile style that ensures functional and aesthetic enjoyment for the long term.
