Christophe Mathieu
Christophe Mathieu, born in Hamburg in 1961 but of Belgian nationality, grew up in Tenerife, Spain, where his early environment profoundly shaped his design ethos. Influenced by his architect father and surrounded by the awe-inspiring nature of the Canary Islands, Mathieu's childhood was steeped in creativity and craftsmanship. His artistic inclinations were nurtured by his great-uncle Petrus, a painter, and further honed through his own explorations in carpentry and landscape painting.
Mathieu's professional journey in design began in earnest after he moved to Barcelona in 1984. After completing his interior design diploma at the Llotja School, his career took a significant leap in Milan, where he collaborated with esteemed designers like Marco Zanuso Jr., Dino Gavina, and Giulio Crespi. His time in Milan was transformative, cementing his passion for industrial design. He returned to Barcelona in 1989, captivated by the city's burgeoning design scene and quality of life, and began teaching at the Elisava School in 1992, imparting his knowledge and philosophy in Furniture Design.
In 2000, Mathieu established his own studio, focusing on a range of design disciplines including interior design, industrial design, and educational ventures. His work has been particularly notable in the lighting industry, where he has made significant contributions to brands like Bover and Marset. His design of the Discocó Pendant for Marset in 2008 is a standout, achieving international acclaim and exemplifying his approach of combining functionality with aesthetic appeal.
