The Arturo Alvarez Story
Arturo Alvarez Lighting was founded by the designer in 1994 in A Coruna, Spain. Alvarez's mission with his contemporary lighting? To stir human emotions, to thrill and excite and otherwise inspire human beings with the power of light and art. He began doing so with his signature line of colorful Spanish leaded glass, each one individually hand-made, numbered and signed. In 2008, Alvarez expanded his line of European lighting with the LAB collection, an experimental series of fixtures conceived by himself and other designers, exploring new, unusual forms and materials.
Why We Love Arturo Alvarez
Arturo Alvarez designs his lighting primarily for the sake of a person's well-being. As he puts it, "The center of our work is the human being, with its needs and interests." Beauty and light are primal needs of the human animal, and Alvarez knows that. The hand-crafting of his lamps--from his original leaded glass designs to the plastic, wood and metal creations of more recent years--lends each a personalized, one-of-a-kind sense of artistry.
A Fun Fact About Arturo Alvarez
Arturo Alvarez's regard for humanity and the environment extends beyond his business practices and lighting designs. He also actively supports Spanish non-profits, contributing to Ayuda en Accion (which cares for underprivileged youth) and donates a percentage of the proceeds from a couple of his collections to Accionatura to help with the reforestation of the Atlantic forest in Brazil.
Noteworthy Lighting From Arturo Alvarez
The elliptical, striped Sophi collection displays Alvarez's use of color to stunning effect, as does the bubbly, '70s-reminiscent Gluc clusters. Meanwhile, Bety is a flirty polypropylene creation conceived more recently by Arturo Alvarez lighting via the experimental LAB.
