A collaboration with Houtlander, the Hlabisa Bench from the Mash T Design Studio presents a stately assembly of folk and functional to its surroundings. A cross-cultural creation from Thabisa Mjo, the mind behind Mash. T, the bench is a striking salute to traditional crafting, inviting conversations, and the warmth of home, inspired by her own visits to the KwaZulu-Natal hills as a child. A mixture of smooth American oak rises along slender legs, adding a curving back that expresses the childhood in the hills, accented by the colorful weave of ilala palm handcrafted by the masterful weavers of KZN over a thousand hours.
Winner of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search competition in 2015, Mash.T Design Studio is the product of Thabisa Mjo, a South African designer collaborating with crafters and other designers to create sustainable and collaborative product designs that exhibit traditional African aesthetics and skills including weaving and beading.
