No modern home should be without!

This doorbell is like a little modern jewel on the facade of your house. It is simple, functional, elegant and refined. The only criticism that I have is that it is a bit pricey. Since you only need one for your house, it isn't a big deal, but I don't see why it should be quite this costly. In spite of that, I would buy it again for my next house (if there is a next house!

Spore doorbell looks great, install is challenging

I bought this doorbell button because it looks great and fits our style, and now that it is installed, I love the way it looks. However, it could definitely be a lot easier to install. I was replacing an existing button on a brick wall and as it turned out, that presented a major challenge. The housing mounts with four small wood screws that really only work with a solid flat wood surface. If your mounting location isn't wood, you're stuck figuring out how to create a wood mount on your own. And since the button stands away from its mounting surface, your wood mount is going to be visible to all your guests and exposed to weathering, which means you need to be extra careful in your choice of wood, your construction techniques and painting/finishing. I cut a 5/8" thick square out of redwood (for durability), drilled 7 holes (two lag screw holes to attach to the existing mounts in the brick wall, one large hole to feed the wires through, and four starter holes for the wood screws), then painted it with 3 coats of semi-gloss black to match our front door. This took me a good chunk of a Saturday, and though I like the results, it would have been even better with a thinner piece of wood (3/8" would be sufficient). I'm sure other users have similar needs, so I would suggest that Spore provide a ready-cut 3/8" wood piece for mounting, with a hole in the center for feeding wires through. Then users like me would only need to figure out how to attach that to their wall and, optionally, paint or finish it. Spore should also make more detailed manufacturing or assembly drawings available online so you can figure out what you're getting and how it might mount before you open the box.

Sometime the dimensions don't shout out at you and you need to see an object installed to appreciate its size. This Square Doorbell by Spore is very large and will become a prominent addition at any doorway. Although minimal in its design, it draws significant attention. And that's not simply on account of its size. What I didn't realize before purchase was how brightly the LEDs light up, making the doorbell visible at night from a few hundred feet away. Honestly, I wish the doorbell was a little more, well, minimal. That said, it is very finely constructed, of great material. and very easy to install.

Simply stated, this is an awesome, modern doorbell with the WOW factor by anyone who rings it. This is a designer item and as such, this is not a value purchase!

Spore

Lamenting the lack of stylish modern doorbells available on the market, Ted Pierson and his business partner, Tom Gordon, founded Spore Doorbells in Seattle, WA, in 1997. Their focus in the design of their doorbells was simplicity and ease of use. Their first doorbell design, Square, fulfilled such goals with its clean shape and LED illuminated resin push button, and set the stage for the various Spore doorbell designs to come.
