Outdoor Dining Benches
A way to create a different look for the outdoor patio is the presence of outdoor dining benches instead of chairs. An outdoor bench will be a single piece on one side of the table, meaning each person on that side will be sitting on the same bench. One advantage of an outside bench is that benches fit better in smaller patio spaces. Guests can also move down easier to make room or provide more personal space to others than with chairs. Some outdoor dining sets will come with chairs or benches, making the decision easier.
Outdoor dining chairs, however, provide each guest with a personal space that they can adjust to their liking – something a bench cannot do. Dining chairs and benches both look nice on upscale and modern patio spaces, so the presence of either or both is up to personal preference.
Regardless of which is present, if not buying from a set, make sure it matches the outdoor dining table. Matching involves the color, size, and style of the table, so consider all of these factors before settling on specific designs for the outdoor space.
Outdoor Dining Bench FAQs
How deep should a dining bench be?
Outdoor dining benches typically range from 14 to 18 inches in depth. A depth of around 16 inches is often ideal for providing comfortable seating while fitting conveniently under most tables.
Expert Tip: While 16 inches is a safe standard, consider the table’s overhang—benches should slide under comfortably without forcing guests to sit too far forward. For deep tabletops (30+ inches), a bench closer to 18 inches improves comfort, while shallower tables pair better with 14-inch depths to avoid awkward knee space.
What do you treat a picnic bench with?
Picnic benches, especially wooden ones, should be treated with weather-resistant coatings like outdoor wood sealers, waterproof varnish, or protective oils like teak or linseed oil. These treatments help extend the life of the bench by preventing moisture and UV damage.
Expert Tip: Avoid generic "outdoor" sealants—opt for penetrating oils (like teak oil for dense woods or linseed for softer cedar) over surface sealers, as they flex with wood movement and resist cracking. Reapply every 6–12 months, but skip silicone-based products; they trap moisture inside the wood, accelerating rot.
What is the best material for an outdoor picnic table?
The best materials for outdoor picnic tables include durable woods like cedar and teak, as well as weather-resistant metals such as powder-coated steel or aluminum. Steel offers longevity and sturdiness, while wood provides a classic, natural look.
Expert Tip: Teak outperforms cedar long-term but requires no treatment—its natural oils repel water. For powder-coated metal, check the coating thickness (minimum 60 microns); cheaper coatings chip, exposing steel to rust. Aluminum won’t rust but can dent in hail-prone areas.
What can I use for an outdoor bench top?
Outdoor bench tops can be made from materials like hardwood (cedar, teak), composite wood, aluminum, stainless steel, or stone. Steel bench tops are particularly popular for their strength, durability, and modern aesthetic.
Expert Tip: Steel tops expand/contract with heat—ensure mounting hardware allows slight movement to prevent warping. For wood, quarter-sawn lumber resists cupping. Stone (like granite) stays cool but needs a sloped design to shed water; avoid porous sandstone in freeze-thaw climates.
