The Toru Pendant from David Trubridge features a spiraling, swirling form made of interlocking bamboo segments. Slim cables suspend it so it appears to float in midair, whether suspended horizontally or vertically. Designed and made in New Zealand, its three-sided geometry takes inspiration from microscopic diatoms, the single-celled microalgae essential to oceanic life. The name “Toru” originates with the Te Reo Maori word for “three,” and corresponds to its triangular structure. When lit, the pendant projects a shifting kaleidoscope of light and shadow, adding organic character to its surroundings.

David Trubridge

After sailing the Pacific with his family for several years, British native David Trubridge landed in Hawkes Bay, NZ, in 1985, and stayed. Inspired by their travels, Trubridge put his skills in architecture and ship-building to use in the design of furniture. A pretty much local business suddenly exploded into an international one when, in 2001, his Body Raft chair was picked up for production by Cappellini.
