Modern Arc Floor Lamps

Arc Floor Lamps for the Home

The arc floor lamp is an icon of mid-century modern design. The first of these modern floor lamps was the Arco Floor Lamp, designed in 1962 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. The design then was the same design used in variations today: a heavy base (usually marble) out of which a slim stem arcs grandly across a space, terminating in a large shade (often a dome of metal that matches the stem). An arc floor lamp is a simple structure, but dramatic in its sweeps. The arc of each floor lamp can vary with angle and length, allowing for different designs and leading to one ideal for specific homes, décor styles and room layouts. Arc floor lamps are conversation starters and will make a statement when placed in a room. In living rooms and great rooms, a floor arc lamp can act as the central piece of illumination. These floor lamps will pair well with other types of living room lighting including table lamps, sconces and overhead track lighting. Modern arc floor lamps also work well in the bedroom or reading nook as a reading floor lamp. Many reading floor lamps exhibit the same qualities of an arched floor lamp, providing an exceptional amount of overarching light to help with reading a favorite book or the newspaper.

An Arched Floor Lamp for Every Style

While inherently modern and taking cues from retro design, arc lamps fit into a variety of household styles. With roots in mid-century modern design, there are several mid-century modern arc floor lamps to choose from. Transitional arc floor lamps incorporate classic and modern design, making for a near-timeless way to decorate the home. Modern and contemporary will continue to be the most popular and varied option, but if looking for something specific consider industrial arc floor lamps or Italian arc floor lamps.

How to Choose the Best Arc Floor Lamp

Choosing just the best arc floor lamp follows a similar rationale as choosing any light fixture for the home. There are several things to consider:

Determine the need for an arc floor lamp. Is it decorative or is it there to provide ample illumination?

Decide on the style. Ensure it matches with the décor of the surrounding room, as arc floor lamps are often statement makers and will stand out in the room.

Always consider the size. Arc floor lamps can be large pieces, so make sure it will fit into the room without overwhelming the décor. Remember to review sizing dimensions like height, width and length to best gauge what size lamp will work best.

Also keep in mind the light fixture's recommended bulb type to be prepared with the right light bulb when the fixture arrives.

Finally, check out its brightness output if it will be used for reading or similar tasks where bright light is preferred.
