The Lumens Furniture Buying Guide: Curated Design for Every Space

Great furniture transforms a house into a home—and at Lumens, we believe every piece should tell a story. Whether you're furnishing a sun-drenched living room, a productive home office, or an alfresco dining area, this guide will help you navigate our curated collection of modern styles, mid-century classics, and weather-resistant patio options.

Finding Your Style

Mid-Century Modern: Timeless Appeal

Characterized by clean lines, organic shapes, and warm wood tones, mid-century modern furniture brings understated sophistication to any space. Iconic pieces like the Wegner Wishbone Chair or Eames Lounge Chair work equally well in contemporary lofts and traditional homes. Look for tapered legs, slim silhouettes, and rich walnut or teak finishes to capture this enduring aesthetic.

Contemporary & Modern: Sleek and Streamlined

For those who prefer crisp, uncluttered spaces, modern furniture emphasizes simplicity and function. Think modular sectionals with low profiles, geometric coffee tables in marble or lacquered wood, and statement lighting that doubles as art. This style adapts effortlessly to evolving trends while maintaining timeless appeal.

Outdoor Living: Patio Furniture That Lasts

Your outdoor space deserves the same attention to design as your interior. High-performance patio furniture combines durability with style—opt for rust-proof powder-coated aluminum frames, UV-resistant Sunbrella cushions, and sustainably harvested teak that weathers beautifully. Sectional seating with deep cushions creates an inviting lounge area, while a sculptural dining set makes alfresco meals unforgettable.

Room-by-Room Essentials

Living Room Furniture: Where Comfort Meets Style

The living room serves as the heart of your home, demanding pieces that balance beauty and practicality. Start with a quality sofa—consider a 96" three-seater for larger spaces or a compact apartment-sized design for city living. Pair it with a versatile coffee table (30"-36" wide is ideal for most seating arrangements) and anchor the space with an area rug that extends at least 12" beyond the sofa.

For added personality, incorporate an accent chair in a bold fabric or sculptural silhouette.

Office Furniture: Productivity Meets Design

With remote work here to stay, investing in a comfortable office is essential. Choose a desk with a depth of at least 30" to comfortably accommodate a monitor and paperwork—a standing desk option adds ergonomic flexibility. Pair it with an adjustable task chair featuring lumbar support and breathable mesh. Storage solutions like floating shelves or a minimalist credenza keep clutter at bay while maintaining a polished look.

Small Spaces: Maximizing Function

For apartments or cozy corners, opt for multifunctional designs. A storage ottoman doubles as extra seating, while a nesting side table can expand when needed. Look for slim-profile armchairs and sofas with raised legs to create a sense of openness.

Bedroom Furniture

At Lumens, we believe your bedroom should be a sanctuary—a harmonious blend of comfort and considered design. Our curated collection of bedroom furniture balances timeless aesthetics with modern functionality, from platform beds in rich, FSC-certified walnut to minimalist nightstands with discreet charging stations.

For designers, we offer tailored solutions like custom upholstered headboards and integrated lighting; for discerning homeowners, pieces that transition effortlessly from sunrise to sunset—think soft-close dresser drawers and vanities with tri-fold mirrors.

Every selection embodies our commitment to craftsmanship, whether it's a handwoven rattan bench or a mid-century modern bed frame with Japanese joinery. Because true luxury isn't just about appearance—it's about how our furniture supports the quiet moments that begin and end your day.

Key Considerations

Quality Over Trends

Invest in pieces built to last: solid wood frames (oak, walnut, or maple), dovetail joinery, and high-density foam cushions. For upholstery, performance fabrics like Crypton or wool blends resist stains and wear.

Proportions Matter

Measure your space before purchasing, noting ceiling heights and doorways. Allow 30"-36" of clearance around furniture for comfortable movement. In dining areas, ensure at least 24" of table width per person.

Lighting as the Finishing Touch

Complement your furniture with layered lighting: a statement pendant over the dining table, a sculptural floor lamp by your reading nook, and subtle sconces to highlight artwork.
