A handsome modern update to a design thought to have been lost decades ago. Made originally for Navy hospitals, the Emeco 1951 Stacking Chair is a timeless piece given new life by car designer extraordinaire Adrian van Hooydonk of BMW Designworks. When the original design landed on the doorstep of Emeco after being won in an online auction, leadership tapped Adrian van Hooydonk to create a new design that retained the brand’s simple, masculine, and utilitarian DNA while looking forward. No stranger to this design problem at BMW, Adrian van Hooydonk began by tweaking the original lines of the 1951 chair to achieve a more dynamic, powerful stance. Emeco craftsmen make each durable recycled aluminum chair in the same 77-step process they’re renowned for. The back and seat rest use innovative, eco-friendly recycled plastic. These elements please against the body and please the eyes as they add a pop of color against the sleek metal.

Emeco

Electrical Machine and Equipment Company (Emeco) was founded in 1944 by Wilton Carlyle Dinges in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Dinges' first assignment came from no other than the U.S. government, to manufacture a strong yet lightweight chair that could withstand water, salt air and rowdy sailors. The result was the iconic Emeco Navy Chair, made enitrely out of durable machined aluminum.
