Originally designed by Poul Henningsen in an attempt to develop functional, fashionable street lighting, the Louis Poulsen Toldbod Glass Pendant was posthumously issued in 2002. The fixture's material composition and surface treatments were radically altered and the design slightly tweaked, but continued to employ Henningsen’s innovative Ellipse reflector. With three layers of lustrous handblown White Opal glass, the result is clean modernism that would shine in a wide range of interior spaces.

Clean design but slightly defective

Last November, I purchased a pair of the small Toldbod pendants to hang over our kitchen island, and just had them installed this week as part of another electrical project. The manufacturer's packaging protects the glass shades very well. The design is clean and simple, if not a little boring compared to other Louis Poulsen lamps. We hung them 30" above the countertop and used Romex clamps to make sure the two lamps are even with one another. We're currently using CREE 500 lumen 2700k 90CRI E12 candelabra LEDs. These have turned out to be too dim and too yellow for my taste, so I'm going to replace them with 800-900 lumen 3000k bulbs from Emery Allen. I do have a couple of nits to pick with the Toldbod. First, the plastic cords don't hang as nicely as the more flexible, cloth-covered cords used on other Louis Poulsen pendants (e.g., the PH5). I'm hoping the cords will straighten themselves out with time and gravity. Second, the socket on one of our lamps will not allow the E12 bulb to thread all the way in, such that the tip of that bulb sticks out more than the one in the other lamp. The socket doesn't seem to have any debris in it or be cross-threaded, but something is preventing the bulb from screwing in the last 5-10mm or so. I'd understand that on a cheap lamp, but not on something at this price point.

Purity and simplicity

The Toldbod light achieves what is inexplicably difficult to find - an utterly simple light fixture that complements the surroundings rather than making a sculptural statement. Not that there're anything wrong with sculptural lighting, a la Klint, but sometimes one wants a light that doesn't claim the focus of the room The Toldbod's lines are perfect and restful. It's the lighting equivalent of refreshing glass of ice water. It's neutral elegance is a visual palette cleanser that gives everything around the space it needs to be appreciated. I also selected this light because it uses a standard fitting that works with incandescent lightbulbs. Many modern lights now only come with LED or other energy-saver fittings. I am not reconciled to the quality of light emitted by the new energy saver bulbs. I will continue to use incandescents until I can find them no longer, especially over a dining table where the cold hues of LED lighting make everything look ghastly. The quality of light emitted through Todbod's opal glass shade is beautiful. It provides downlighting as well as diffuse room lighting which I feel is the ideal combination of light for over a dining room table.

Same design DNA as my original PH5 Classic

I needed simple illumination in an area adjacent to my dining room that wouldn't detract from, but would "quietly dance with" my original mid-century PH5 Classic hanging over the dining table. The Toldbod Glass Pendant works perfectly with my Poul Henningson treasure. An LED bulb and dimmer have given the Toldbod 21st century functionality.

Classic + Contemporary = Timeless

This pendant hits the right notes for me. It has a classic shape with a modern twist: contemporary materials, minimal embellishments and beautiful when illuminated. Glass shade is very smooth and light is very even. Not sure about quality control as 1 of 3 pendants I ordered was not functional out of the box. (Terrific Lumens service provided a replacement.)
