Made in Germany
Designed by Maurer in 1980, the Floatation Suspension from Ingo Maurer is a suspension light made from Japanese paper shades and provides ambient illumination. Three handmade shades are suspended by thin metal cables and a red iron ring provides accent as well as acts as counterweight for height adjustment. The paper of Floatation is crinkled and this is an intended design attribute. The material can react to fluctuations in humidity and can change the rigidity of the shades.

I love the fixture, although we received a used and broken light fixture. They sent a replacement very quickly though.

Comments about Floatation Suspension

The product is wonderful - it replaces the exact same fixture after 23 years of service. The shipping is another story: Package 1, the armature, arrived safely. Package two the three 48 inch paper shades was inadequately packed (that's an understatement) - The shades in thin plastic sheeting inside a single layer cardboard carton. [ I'll attach photos ] The UPS driver noted the damaged carton on delivery. the topmost shade is ripped but we've installed rather than the ordeal of exchange and re-installation. Truly shoddy presentation of a not-inexpensive product.

Merchant Response

Comments about Floatation Suspension

As an architect in NYC, I'm always looking for lighting that feels like art—and the Floatation Suspension Light delivers. Its handmade Japanese paper shades and bold red ring create a sculptural presence, while the soft, diffused glow brings warmth and atmosphere to any space. The design is timeless: minimal yet expressive, with impeccable craftsmanship. It's available in multiple sizes and adjustable for height, making it versatile for residential or hospitality settings. The light quality is simply beautiful—poetic, inviting, and transformative. More than a fixture, it's an experience. If you value design integrity and mood, this piece is worth it.

"I still have a mystical attraction to light. To this day I'm amazed that I can push a button and a light comes on. I know how it works, but I don't think about the technique. I'm just fascinated by it." – Ingo Maurer
