The largest land mammal on earth, sculpturally imagined by the most influential couple of the 20th century. First shown at the MoMA in 1946, the Eames Plywood Elephant from Vitra brings the Eames’ celebrated flavor of fun in a design underscoring their legacy of arduous materials research. This charming piece for the adult to admire or the child to sit on beautifully captures Charles and Ray Eames’ multi-disciplinary approach to design. This piece represented a technical breakthrough for the Eames’, as it achieved complex curves through a long-refined plywood molding technique. Both the body and the head are composed of a single plywood panel, giving them an artful, refined quality. The American cherry head shows the Eames’s sense of play with big floppy ears and dotted eyes.
Founded in Switzerland in 1950, Vitra produces intelligent and inspiring furniture and accessories for the home, office and other public spaces. Ever mindful of the importance of sustainability in design, Vitra creates furnishings with high quality and versatile style that ensures functional and aesthetic enjoyment for the long term.
