In 1923, Antonio Calligaris founded his small artisanal furniture business with the "Marocca" chair, distinguished by gently curved wood legs and a handwoven rush seat. For decades, the company continued to specialize in handmade wood furniture, until strides in manufacturing automation as well as a proliferation of new materials, metals, plastics, glass, fabrics, helped Calligaris to expand the variety of its contemporary furniture and improve the speed with which it was made.
