Silica Studio

Silica Studio is a design-driven lighting collection founded in 2019 by glass artist Dierk van Keppel, created to honor and preserve the historic blown-glass lighting industry in the United States. Rooted in the craftsmanship of its parent company, Rock Cottage Glassworks (established in 1991), Silica bridges heritage and modern design—producing decorative lighting that feels both timeless and strikingly current.

At its core, Silica Studio is built on a simple belief: a light fixture can be more than functional. It can hold story, technique, and a tangible sense of provenance. Every piece reflects a deep respect for American glassmaking traditions while embracing innovative design thinking—creating lighting that is sculptural, intentional, and deeply atmospheric.

Handcrafted Glass, Made from Historic Cast-Iron Molds

What makes Silica Studio uniquely compelling is its reliance on historic cast-iron blow molds—tools once used throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries to create glass forms at scale. As American glass factories declined over time due to increasing offshore production, many of these molds were left behind, sold off, or abandoned. Silica Studio stepped into that loss with a preservation mindset: Dierk van Keppel began salvaging molds from defunct American factories, protecting their legacy and giving them renewed purpose.

Today, the collection is made using hundreds of these historic molds, allowing each pendant or glass form to carry forward a specific lineage of American manufacturing history. The result is lighting that feels rooted in the past, but unmistakably designed for contemporary interiors—architectural and clean, yet rich with texture and story.

Built for Interiors That Value Authentic Craft

Silica Studio’s work is shaped by a small team of skilled glassblowers and specialists, each contributing to lighting that blends artisan technique with design precision. The collection includes handcrafted glass pendant lighting as well as support for curated canopies and larger-scale custom applications, offering solutions that range from a single statement fixture to dramatic multi-light installations.

Because each glass form is created through mold-blown processes, the work reflects a consistency of shape while preserving the subtle nuances of handmade production—tiny variations and tonal shifts that signal real craft. This approach allows Silica Studio to produce lighting that feels both collectible and livable: sculptural enough to anchor a space, yet functional enough to integrate into daily life.
