Perhaps the best-known of all Alvar Aalto's furniture pieces. Designed in 1931, the Paimio Chair was named for the town in which Aalto designed a hospital and all its furnishings. Vaguely inspired by the Wassily Chair, Aalto resisted the use of metal and chose native birch wood for this shaped masterpiece.

Artek

In 1935, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl teamed up to "promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means." They wanted to change the way the public viewed modern design by incorporating their beautiful, simple, functional designs into everyday life. "Artek" is a mashup of Art and Technology and sums up the company's philosophy.
