Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer

Marcel Breuer was a Hungarian-born architect and furniture designer who made significant contributions to modernist architecture and design. Born in 1902, he played a pivotal role in the Bauhaus movement, where he studied and later taught. Breuer's innovative approach to design was characterized by his exploration of new materials, particularly bent and tubular steel. This led to the creation of famous furniture pieces, including the Wassily Chair and the Cesca Chair for Knoll. The Wassily chair remains one of the most recognizable examples of Bauhaus design. Breuer's affinity for concrete made him a key figure in Brutalist architecture. His architectural works, such as the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City, showcase his mastery of geometric forms, clean lines and the seamless integration of interior and exterior spaces. He was the recipient of the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 1968. He died in New York at the age of 79.
