Amazing Light!
This lamp is amazing in so many ways. Very unique, simple and fits perfectly in our den. The lamp came packed very well with lots of information about the fabrication process which is great - we really cant express how great this light is!
Gorgeous design but material is frail and weak structurally
The gatto is a piece of lighted sculpture and a masterpiece of design. However, the skin is very frail and weak in resisting tensile stresses in the longitudinal direction. It arrived with a 12" long vertical crack. YLighting was fantastic about sending me a replacement immediately. However, the replacement ALSO had a crack, albeit a much smaller one (about 1.5"). I have to say that YLighting's customer service has been VERY responsive and helpful. However, I cannot recommend this lamp until FLOS improves the material so that the reinforcing fibers are integral with the outside skin, which will help immensely toward resisting the tendency to crack. Right now the backing fibers are separate from the frail skin. (The George Nelson lamps are a much stronger product.) That being said, I will buy this lamp once it is improved because the design by Achille Castiglioni is unparalleled!
Beautiful lines
I can't say enough about the Gatto table lamp. THough initially I was a bit hesitant to buy it because I thought that it might look like a cheap Chhinatown Japanese globe lamp...all that changed when I took it out of the box. The material (a plastic polymer) is like nothing you've felt, and it looks beautiful. The construction is solid, and the light it emits is soft yet radiant (though I replaced the 60w bulb included with a much more alluring 25w bulb. I still think it is a bit expensive, but I have to admint this is more sculpture than lamp!
FLOS
Visionary designers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, along with Tobia Scarpa, founded FLOS in 1962 in Merano, Italy aiming to revolutionize the way people experience light. Headquartered today in Bovezzo, Italy, FLOS embodies the spirit of modern Italian design, combining groundbreaking experimentation with artistic innovation—famously exemplified by their iconic cocoon lighting fixtures made by spraying resin onto steel frames.
