The Nelson Cigar Bubble Pendant from Herman Miller is George Nelson's 1952 design that explored how soft plastic could reshape lighting by eliminating glare while maintaining brightness. Nelson developed a technique where spray vinyl is applied over a steel wire frame, creating a taut skin with vertical ribbing that diffuses light evenly in all directions. Each lamp is handcrafted in Michigan, ensuring the sculptural oval form that made these fixtures part of the Museum of Modern Art's permanent collection. The field-adjustable cord allows for customized drop heights in various spaces.

Great design and perfect for my space - elevated a little corner nook to feel like a whole room! (Electrician complained it was hard to install but got it done.)

Comments about Nelson Cigar Bubble Pendant

I almost didn't get the lamp because the first time I ordered it, the person on the phone took my order, promised to send an invoice, and never did. She also misinformed me in minor ways ("We don't use UPS, we always FedEx"), making me think perhaps she was new. But I did call Lumens back. They could find no record of my first call, but took the order again, gave me a better price, and the fixture was delivered (by UPS) when promised. I'm not going to presume to try to say something new about the design of George Nelson bubble lamps--if this design doesn't speak to you, what I could say would be irrelevant. A small point, but important in the case of our particular situation, is that the for their size these lamps are very light in weight. I had an electrician install this in an entryway where there hadn't been a light fixture before, and he had to make a hole in the ceiling. For a heavier fixture, he would have had to tear out more stucco and put in wood reinforcements. And doing that and then patching the stucco, on a high ladder, is time consuming and adds cost. The Nelson lamp was a pragmatic choice as well as an aesthetic success. And Rocinante is much better illuminated!

Herman Miller

One of the most influential brands in American design, renowned for pioneering iconic mid-century modern furniture and lighting solutions, Herman Miller began its storied history in 1905 as Star Furniture Co. in Zeeland, Michigan. In 1923, businessman Herman Miller lent his name to the company, signaling a new chapter under the visionary leadership of his son-in-law, D.J. De Pree. This marked the beginning of Herman Miller's transformation into kingmakers of mid-century design.
