A poetic design inspired by the intriguing praying mantis and the equally intriguing mobiles of Alexander Calder. Designed by Bernard Schottlander in 1951, the Mantis LED BS5 Mini Wall Sconce from DCW Editions still resonates today as a sculptural design and producer of soft illumination. Like Calder, Schottlander uses abstraction to suggest familiar objects with a sense of balance. Using a spinning and chasing technique, the adjustable aluminum head moves in a soft, organic shape that suggests the praying mantis's head. Lifted with an adjustable arm, the shade provides a glare-free experience as it covers the bulb inside. Turn it on and receive a pleasant downward stream of ambient illumination.
