I put three of these in a stair case, three floors. You do look down into them as you come down the steps and can see the bulb. I put an opaque 40 watt big flame bulb in them so you didn't stare at an ugly bulb as you came down the steps. They wash the wall straight up. Nice subtle effect. I would worry if you needed more light, that the higher watt bulb would be ugly, if the sconce wasn't above eye level.
