Designed in 2017 by Gabriele and Oscar Buratti, it starts with a disc base of galvanized metal that steps up to a smooth platform holding a single slender stem. This ascends straight up to a glass dome shade supported by a central metal band that gives the fixture its name. The band holds two inward-oriented LEDs that reflect off the shade’s interior, drawing the eye as observers try to figure out how the empty shade shines.

Architect Gio Ponti founded FontanaArte lighting in Milan in 1932 after serving as the artistic director of Luigi Fontana Company. The focus was on stained glass and its awe-inspiring presence in churches and cathedrals. In 1979, the contemporary lighting company is purchased by several private buyers and is revitalized to include well-known architects and glass artists.
