Husband-and-wife Karen Gilbert and Paul Pavlak don’t just balance each other out in life, they balance each other out in their design process. Gilbert’s deep influence from the arts and Pavlak’s architectural mindset show clearly in the elegant, refined Balance 1.0 Pendant from SkLO. In every one of their creations, Gilbert and Pavlak seek to show the hand of the artisan. Showing this point is its double-dipped, handblown, and fire-kissed glass globes. The globes are hand-worked by master artisans in the Czech Republic, a country that’s held its place at the top of fine glassmaking for centuries. Gilbert’s sculptural sense shows in the gestural curve of the stem. Warm, radiant light radiates through the delightful globes, emphasizing a seductive silhouette of clean line and shape.

SkLO

Located in Northern California, SkLO is the brainchild of artist Karen Gilbert, architect Paul Pavlak, and Czech-native Pavel Hanousek. The three met in Healdsburg in 2009, and after discovering a unanimous passion for hand-blown glass (sklo means “glass” in Czech), they decided to create a multi-disciplinary studio focusing on glass lighting and accessory design.
