Tobia Scarpa

Tobia Scarpa

Tobia Scarpa stands as a defining figure in postwar Italian design, known for a multidisciplinary practice spanning architecture, furniture, and lighting. Born in Venice in 1935, he was shaped early by the influence of his father, the renowned architect Carlo Scarpa, instilling a deep sensitivity to material, proportion, and craft. He later studied architecture at the Università Iuav di Venezia, where he met his lifelong collaborator and wife, Afra Bianchin. Together, they founded their studio in 1960, forming one of the most influential design partnerships of the twentieth century.

A Philosophy of Material Intelligence

At the core of Scarpa’s work is a rigorous exploration of materials—their structure, their expressive potential, and their relationship to form. His designs are guided by clarity and intention, often revealing how an object is made while maintaining a sense of refinement and restraint. Clean lines, balanced proportions, and thoughtful construction define his approach, merging modernist principles with a respect for traditional craftsmanship.

Iconic Works & Enduring Collaborations

Throughout his career, Scarpa collaborated with leading design houses including B&B Italia, Cassina, Flos, and Knoll, producing works that remain central to contemporary design discourse. Among the most celebrated is the Soriana armchair, awarded the Compasso d’Oro for its innovative approach to comfort and form. Other notable designs, such as the Coronado sofa and the Papillona lamp, reflect his ability to integrate emerging technologies with timeless aesthetics—creating pieces that feel both progressive and enduring.
