Why We Love Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec
While each is an excellent designer in his own right, there's no denying the astounding designs Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have achieved as a team. They play off each others' strengths and personalities to create pieces that are beautiful, balanced and, often, infused with a distinct sense of humor. Jasper Morrison has described the Bouroullec aesthetic as "thoughtful and disciplined, with real spirit and poetry." The strength of Bouroullec designs, as well as their impressive proliferation, have earned Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec the characterization of being the most promising designers to come out of France since Philippe Starck.
In Their Own Words
Erwan - "There’s always teamwork in design. For most designers, the first time they have to explain or justify their work is to the manufacturer. By then, we’ve spent weeks, maybe months, arguing over the tiniest details."
Ronan - "Usually our work is strongest when we disagree, because that’s when we push each other to go further. If we’re in agreement, it’s often mediocre."
Products by Erwan & Ronan Bouroullec
Algue is a signature design of the Bouroullecs, created for Vitra. At once a space planner and decorative element, Algue includes sets of delicate plastic branches that are snapped together in custom configurations to form organic, translucent room screens. Somewhat heavier is the Steelwood collection for Magis. It shows Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec's willingness to experiment and mix-and-match unexpected materials, with beech wood legs, steel framing/joints and laminate tabletops.
