Maurer is fascinated by light and all the different ways it can be created, captured and otherwise manipulated. He doesn’t concern himself with trends or fashions. He doesn’t need to. From the employment of Campari bottles to goose feathers to all manners of paper products (including tissue), it’s his ceaseless imagination that informs his design aesthetic. Speaking of stimulating the imagination, Maurer is also known for his lavish light installations. Whether it be a commercial commission or a project for charity (that giant UNICEF Snowflake that hangs in mid-Manhattan every holiday season? Designed by Maurer), his large scale works are captivating. His most recent project, scheduled to open in Brazil in 2014, is “Broken Egg,” an 82-foot long, 50-foot high inhabitable light-infused egg.
