The Artek Bench 153A is a conveniently contemporary seating solution in pretty much any room of the home. It is made entirely out of solid birch in a clear or colored lacquer. The legs are signature Alvar Aalto: lengths of solid birch bent into strong and graceful curves. Such curves are quite clean, however, so are the ideal complement to the slatted seat.

Design - 5 stars, assembly - 3

I've always loved the design of this table and finally found an excuse to buy one. The design is classic and beautifully made. You buy this piece if you think of furniture as art. My only issue is with the assembly. The four legs were easy - the screw holes properly aligned and tight. That part took 15 minutes only because I had to find the tools. But there are two bridge pieces that have to be hammered in, and that's a problem. The piece itself is drilled, but the part of the bench it goes on isn't. I'm not very strong, so hammering into had wood is not my number one choice, but worse, it wasn't till I stood the piece up that I realized I hadn't aligned the pieces very well. If they had supplied four tiny screws - with four properly aligned holes - it would have made all the difference, and this would be a 5 star review.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Looks playful...not totally functional.

You should have a really good context for this bench to make sense. Otherwise, it looks like you picked it up from a kindergarten garage sale. Slat top is also a little annoying if you're like me and put your keys aside you while you tie your shoes. They will fall through the bench to the ground.

I was looking for something that would look good with the furniture I already have. I looked for clean lines and light wood. I love the designs with bend wood and plywood. this bench is designed very well, feels and looks sturdy. I love it!

Artek

In 1935, Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen and Nils-Gustav Hahl teamed up to "promote a modern culture of habitation by exhibitions and other educational means." They wanted to change the way the public viewed modern design by incorporating their beautiful, simple, functional designs into everyday life. "Artek" is a mashup of Art and Technology and sums up the company's philosophy.
