Sign InDutch designer Marcel Wanders began his artistic career in 1988 after graduating cum laude from the School of the Arts Arnhem. He opened his own studio in Amsterdam in 1995 and shortly after added the iconic Knotted Chair, the piece that brought him international recognition, to his unique body of works.
In 2001, Wanders co-founded the successful modern design label, Moooi, and still holds the position as Art Director there. As an involved artist with a hand in multiple projects, Wanders also creates for a number of contemporary European design manufacturers like Alessi and FLOS.
Called the "Lady Gaga of the design world" by the New York Times, Marcel Wanders boldly defies fashion expectations with his use of shape, texture and proportion to the delight of those with deliciously twisted taste. His design philosophy is based on an active love affair with his audience; he lets the dreams, hopes and aspirations of his public inspire his designs, and vice versa. It's a mutually beneficial relationship, with both the audience and designer moving each other forward. They say not all who wander are lost -- no one proves that to be truer than Mr. Wanders himself.
The unexpected floral-patterned plaster interior of the Flos Skygarden Suspension and the playful, lifelike Moooi Rabbit Lamp are just two examples that help define Wanders as an envelope-pushing fashion designer for the lighting and interior decorating world.
"If there's a single reason why design is so important to me," he says, "it is probably the potential it gives me to inspire, to contribute to the concept of a world changing in the direction my heart and head want to go."
