Sign InIn 1997, Sandy Chilewich founded Chilewich based on her experience choosing materials for HUE legwear. Her first products were the Raybowls and Ray Tray, using stretchable, breathable mesh for produce storage. During that design process, Chilewich came across woven vinyl. Impressed by that material's durability and design versatility, Chilewich introduced her first collection of vinyl floormats, tablemats and totes in 2000.
In 2001, she and husband Joe Sultan came up with "plynyl", woven vinyl specially constructed with a commercial grade backing for infinite contract applications. And they've never looked back.
Who'd have thought that vinyl could be so fashionable? The seamless, creative weaves and colors of vinyl strands continuously devised by Chilewich create textiles that are just as beautiful as they are durable (and easy to clean). And the variety of patterns appears to be endless, ranging from the traditional basketweave to pressed, spun and lattice patterns. The pattern and the color of the faux boix collection is so realistic, the placemats look like genuine cuts of wood. Quite simply, the line of Chilewich rugs, placemats and runners, mats, and other textiles add an unexpected element of style to entertaining and everyday dining.
With the exception of the pressed and faux bois patterns and napkin ring collections, all Sandy Chilewich products are made exclusively in the US.
The Basketweave pattern is perpetually the most popular one offered by Chilewich. The versatility of the pattern combined with an ever-evolving palette of colors means it will never go out of style. Meanwhile, the pressed vinyl technique blooms with the Dahlia collection.
