With that experience under his design belt, Meda branched off on his own in 1979 and started his professional career as engineer, designer and consultant for a wide variety of companies, including Alessi, Alfa Romeo auto, and Luceplan, to name a few. In the early '80s, Meda taught industrial technology and joined Luceplan as a partner in '84. From then on, Alberto Meda spent the majority of his time designing new, innovative furniture and lighting for Kartell.

"During the design process, I connect with a certain physical feature, a material or a technique, and step-by-step the final shape grows clear from that. Often a structural concept or a technical or technological solution will trigger the thought around which the object grows," he says.
