The Lights Up! Story
Lights Up! is a Brooklyn, NY-based contemporary lighting company founded by Rachel Simon in 1987. It started out strictly as a lampshade maker before Simon eventually decided to add her own fittings and bases. Simon found her niche in the lighting industry with relatively simple forms (drums, rectangles, etc.), retro-inspired bases and, especially, a large selection of shade options.
To this day, Simon continues to expand the Lights Up! collection of modern pendants, chandeliers and portables through collaboration with artists and textile designers like Camilla Meijer and Thomas Paul.
Why We Love Lights Up! Lighting
For sheer variety of shade options, there's no beating Lights Up! There are dozens of choices, including solid silks, optical poly film, graphic nature-themed patterns (printed with water-based inks on fabric made out of recycled PET), tweeds, linens and even wood veneers. All of these options make every Lights Up! fixture colorfully customizable. More than that, quality manufacture of each shade--handmade to order, heat-sealed edges, styrene backing--and super-careful packaging means that each shade is made (and shipped) to last.
Fun Facts About Lights Up!
Some Lights Up! older design collections--such as the Lucy and Louie--are named after super-loyal and long-term Lights Up! employees.
