Michele De Lucchi.

A prominent figure in radical/anti-design movements like Cavart, Alchimia and Memphis in the 1970s and 1980s, De Lucchi worked alongside famed designer Ettore Sottsass. Sottsass became a kind of mentor and taught De Lucchi about the importance of colors, considering unexplored themes, and the use of versatile materials like plastic laminates and others. During this time, De Lucchi created his most popular product to date, the worldwide bestselling Tolomeo Table Lamp for Artemide.

After the stunning success of the Tolomeo lamp, De Lucchi continued his design work across a number of disciplines and for a variety of clients, including Olivetti, Kartell, Vitra, Ameico and, yes, Artemide.

After the tapering off of the radical design movement, Michele De Lucchi founded Produzione Privata in 1990 to satisfy his continuing urge to design for change and to satisfy his need to cultivate himself as an artist. To this day, De Lucchi continues to create for himself in this kind of "limited edition products laboratory," independent of the concern over mass opinion and marketability.
