With that experience under his design belt, Meda branched off on his own in 1979 and started his professional career as engineer, designer and consultant for a wide variety of companies, including Alessi, Alfa Romeo auto, and Luceplan, to name a few. In the early '80s, Meda taught industrial technology and joined Luceplan as a partner in '84. From then on, Alberto Meda spent the majority of his time designing new, innovative furniture and lighting for Kartell.

Best known for his furniture pieces, Alberto Meda continues to define and then redefine contemporary comfort, utilizing his knowledge of plastics to create user-friendly, functional furnishings for the modern space.

"During the design process, I connect with a certain physical feature, a material or a technique, and step-by-step the final shape grows clear from that. Often a structural concept or a technical or technological solution will trigger the thought around which the object grows," he says.

Meda's process is thus organic, finding its form as each material is related to and considered for human use and enjoyment. Some of his most famous designs include the MedaPro and MedaPal office chairs for Vitra and the Titania Pendant for Luceplan.
