Antonio Citterio's personal motto comes down to one word: "curiosity." He is interested in everything around him. In wanting to know more about everything, he has had his hand in the design of just about everything, from cutlery and lamps to home fitness equipment, industrial products and entire corporate buildings. And he does so based not so much on popular design trends as his own personal taste. "I make things for myself," Citterio says. "I don't work with marketing instructions. If I won't surround myself with these things, I don't make them."
By designing for himself as an individual-instead of conforming to an established style-Citterio's personality is stamped on everything he creates. He leaves it to others to determine if his self-focused approach to design is successful. So far, for nearly forty years, the consensus has been an emphatic "yes." Since 1972, Citterio has designed products for companies such as Arclinea, B&B Italia, Flexform, Flos Lighting
, and Vitra
. In 1987, he expanded into architecture and interior design. In 1999, he founded Antonio Citterio and Partners, expanding into graphic design and corporate branding.
In his work as a home furnishings designer, Citterio's eye as an architect makes the room the focus of his creativity. He envisions individual pieces as functional and aesthetic parts of a whole system. While claiming inspiration from such modern design innovators as Charles and Ray Eames, Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, and Alvaro Siza, Antonio Citterio cannot determine his own individual style. "If I have one, its news to me," Citterio says.
Pieces ranging from the Kelvin T Lamps for Flos to the award-winning Mobil Cabinet
for Kartell speak to Citterio's individuality and inability to be categorized.
