To create a centerpiece tray using only a thin sheet of stainless steel, designer Andrea Morgante was inspired by Megaptera whales expanding their ventral grooves to accommodate a larger volume of water when feeding. The Alessi Megaptera Centerpiece is similarly deformed, with a ribbed bowl optimizing rigidity without increasing the overall thickness of the steel sheet.
