The SkLO Studio Story
Located in Northern California, SkLO is the brainchild of artist Karen Gilbert, architect Paul Pavlak, and Czech-native Pavel Hanousek. The three met in Healdsburg in 2009, and after discovering a unanimous passion for hand-blown glass (sklo means “glass” in Czech), they decided to create a multi-disciplinary studio focusing on glass lighting and accessory design.
Read MoreSkLO taps into the knowledge and expertise Hanousek has of his native craft and reworks it to match the design sensibilities of Gilbert and Pavlak. All glass shades and objects are hand-blown by master glassmakers in the Czech Republic, providing an authentic provenance for each design..
Why We Love SkLO Lighting
SkLO's design ethos rests on the “tradition of craft” and the “discipline of design,” manifesting in a range of lighting designs defined by the handmade process. As a result, slight variation in each piece of glass is welcome and encouraged, made most apparent by their hand-wrapped and organically shaped fixtures.
Fun Facts About SkLO
In addition to her contributions to SkLO, Karen Gilbert is an accomplished artist and jewelry designer with many solo exhibitions and publications to her name. She co-owns the Gallery Lulo in Healdsburg, CA, which features art, sculpture and jewelry.
Noteworthy Lighting from SkLO
The SkLO Lasso Double Pendant promotes the perfection of imperfection. Each clear tube of glass is carefully wrapped to achieve the spherical shape, much like a lasso wraps around its intended object. Each angle reveals a different look; in profile the rings stack together from shortest to longest at the center, and when viewed directly, the light sources and structure are exposed. Due to the handmade process, each pendant will have a unique look.
