Joergen & Nanna Ditzel’s iconic 1955 design is not only re-introduced to bring your home a handsome Danish mid-century modern classic but to create positive change in the environment as it’s made using the ocean’s recycled plastics and fishnets. The Ocean Table from Mater is a win-win piece, bringing the home comfortable seating and the earth’s oceans cleaner water. The Ditzel family gives their blessing reimaging the table to Mater and their mission for creating ethical and sustainable pieces. Nanna Ditzel herself explored the different ways we could hone materials to create newfound ideas. To make its recycled plastic material, mand-made ocean waste is wiped from the ocean in tons, then cleaned, sorted, and refined into tiny pellets for pressing into shapes. Made in the recycled material, the tabletop design adds to the open feel of the piece as its ingeniously crafted panels are sequenced neatly with a sliver of space between them, making for an easy to clean surface. With no wasted movement, its slender steel frame outlines the piece in a continuous, aesthetically pleasing contour. While pleasing in looks, the slender frame translates to a comfortable, open seating experience.
Founded in 2006 by Henrik Marstrand, Mater (Latin for “mother”) is a Danish lighting and furniture brand with a highly ethical approach to design. As a way to improve the environmental and social impacts of production, Mater sums up their company mission in three words: Design, craftsmanship and ethics. Using responsibly sourced materials to create their timeless designs, Mater not only strives to preserve traditional techniques, but takes care to create a cooperative environment between designers and artisans both in Denmark and abroad.
