Key Features
A Jørgen & Nanna Ditzel classic revived for the health of our oceans. A seat on the Ocean Chair doesn't just bring a sense of comfort and sophistication, it fires up our push for positive change by giving new life to discarded fishnets. Mater tapped Jørgen & Nanna Ditzel's iconic 1955 piece to give form to the innovative material. The Ditzel family echoed Nana Ditzel's studies in new materials, making this a piece that would have surely satisfied her. The chair follows the formula of the original, presenting a clean, coastal aesthetic highlighted by a wavy back and seat rest. This flowing slatted design showcases the recycled plastic material. To reach its moldable state, engineers take fishnets that would often be scattered across our seas, cleans and processes them, then transforms them into moldable pellets. The durable plastic rests gracefully over a light yet sturdy steel frame, inviting a comfortable seating posture that looks good from any angle.
Founded in 2006 by Henrik Marstrand, Mater (Latin for “mother”) is a Danish lighting and furniture brand with a highly ethical approach to design. As a way to improve the environmental and social impacts of production, Mater sums up their company mission in three words: Design, craftsmanship and ethics. Using responsibly sourced materials to create their timeless designs, Mater not only strives to preserve traditional techniques, but takes care to create a cooperative environment between designers and artisans both in Denmark and abroad.
