Key Features
2.75 kilos, the number of discarded fishnets that have been cleaned up from the face of the ocean and put to work as a revolutionary material in this truly sustainable chair. The Nova Sea Armchair from Mater is designed with the idea of preserving life on land and below the sea. For Mater and design studio ARDE, sustainability is more than a buzzword. They map out each of their pieces, from its journey as a sliver of raw material to its impact if broken down and recycled. The duo takes the fishnets scattering across our world’s waters, cleans them, sorts them, then transforms them into fine pellets that can be crafted into a bevy of shapes. Every angle you look at this piece presents a composition of shapes and lines that appear like a work of art. Made in fishnet plastic, the shell emphasizes the understated elegance of the piece as it uses a clean shape and a subtly bent surface to make for a pleasant resting position. A stackable steel frame draws across the air in an elegant movement of line that creates the seat, back, and supports fluidly.
Founded in 2006 by Henrik Marstrand, Mater (Latin for “mother”) is a Danish lighting and furniture brand with a highly ethical approach to design. As a way to improve the environmental and social impacts of production, Mater sums up their company mission in three words: Design, craftsmanship and ethics. Using responsibly sourced materials to create their timeless designs, Mater not only strives to preserve traditional techniques, but takes care to create a cooperative environment between designers and artisans both in Denmark and abroad.
