Looks We Love: Pantone 2022 Color of the Year: Very Peri

In a year that was nothing short of unexpected, the Pantone Color of the Year announcement has followed suit. For the first time in its color trend forecasting history, the Pantone Color Institute has broken its own mold by creating a new color all its own for 2022: Very Peri.

Since 1999, Pantone has worked with color experts and enthusiasts from around the world to select a color capable of representing the current cultural moment, while setting the trend for design, fashion and artistic color theory in the year to come. For 2022, Pantone set (and achieved) a lofty goal: to reflect the innovation and transformation that's persisted in the face of unprecedented global change.

“As society continues to recognize color as a critical form of communication, and a way to express and affect ideas and emotions and engage and connect, the complexity of [Very Peri] highlights the expansive possibilities that lay before us.”

– Laurie Pressman

Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute

Combining hues from the trusted blue color family with a violet-red undertone, Very Peri stands for courageous creativity, pure curiosity and a playful aesthetic. The whimsicality of Very Peri lends itself to unpredictable color harmonies, making it an exciting and versatile new color to incorporate into your home space.

With four dedicated Very Peri palettes, you can let your creativity flow. Balancing Act, seen above, takes up warm and cool tones, while Wellspring offers a focus on nature and nourishment with healthy shades of green and yellow. Star of the Show works with a palette of neutral classics to provide a sense of quiet elegance, and Amusements rounds out the collection with lively spontaneity. Whether your space is bright and whimsical or soft and earthy, complementary Very Peri has a place in your home décor.

Spontaneous Color Statements

Muse Wall/Ceiling Light by Sandro Santantonio for Axolight.

Characterized as a courageous color, Very Peri is meant to inspire personal inventiveness and expression. While you might be wary to create a Purple Palace à la The Artist (Formerly Known as Prince), Very Peri is a transformative and talented hue that can serve as both centerpiece and accent. For a noticeable pop of color, look to large luminaires like Axolight's Muse Wall/Ceiling Light.

Bumper Ottoman by Blu Dot.

Alternately, you can make a more subtle statement with upholstered furniture like Blu Dot's Bumper Ottoman, which provides both accent and anchor in a room that uses color sparingly; coordinating bed linens complete the look. Or, try a Very Peri desk or accent lamp for a portable fix that's less commitment.

Delight in the Details

Essence Decanter in Amethyst by Alfredo Haberli for Iittala.

Perhaps easing into the Color of the Year is more your style—and Very Peri is all about personal flair. If so, home accessories are an excellent way to wet your toes. Eye-catching and playful, Very Peri adds a delightful surprise, even in small doses. For entertaining aficionados, incorporating the Color of the Year easily sparks conversation with hosting-must haves like Iittala's Essence Decanter.

Contour Vase by Pentagon Design for Nude.

Indoor gardeners and art collectors alike can incorporate a complementary tone with Nude's Contour Vase, shown here with a rich copper base that contrasts the deep purple as opposites on the color wheel. A bit of greenery (one of Pantone's previous Color of the Year selections) rounds out this natural palette.

Mix & Match Materials

Aalto Vase 140th Anniversary Special Edition by Alvar Aalto for Iittala.

Pantone color experts advocate for handcrafted looks and fibers when incorporating Very Peri, and so do we. This year's color finds an especially captivating presence in mouth-blown glass pieces, like Iittala's 140th Anniversary Special Edition Aalto Vase.

Colonna Stool in Pink by Kartell.

And, we'd be remiss not to include a mention of Kartell's end tables and stools, which are just as versatile as Very Peri, doubling as a seating option as well as space for books or a table lamp.

Utopian Fairy Tales Round Rug in Power by Noortje van Eekelen for Moooi Carpets.

Textured textiles add a vibrancy that's right in line with the Color of the Year—think solid-colored pillows and throws. If you have the space and are working with complementary neutral tones in larger furniture pieces, a rug like Moooi Carpets' Utopian Fairy Tales Round Rug can really tie the room together.

An Outdoor Ovation

Vela Sofa Illuminated by Ramon Esteve for Vondom.

While you might have to travel to a faraway rainforest to spot Very Peri in nature, that doesn't mean you can't incorporate Very Peri into your own backyard. Without the constraints of interior walls, Very Peri is free to show off and take center stage. Working with the naturally occurring outdoor hues that inspired Pantone's complementary Wellspring palette, you can opt for statement furniture like Vondom's Vela collection, which has pieces that come in a Plum finish as well as illuminated options in the full RGB spectrum.

Just as Pantone was inspired to create something new to represent these transforming times, Very Peri invites us to engage our creative spirit and imagination to transform our home spaces with a renewed sense of possibility and excitement for what's to come.
