The Light & Contrast Story

Light & Contrast is a relatively young company, established by industrial designer Peter Stathis and Ameico founder/owner Peter Kahane in 2012. With the initial emphasis on contrast. It was during the 2011 International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York that Stathis was introducing his newest design – the Trapeze LED Table Lamp – a then joint venture with JOBY (the GorillaPod camera company).

Stathis and company left the fair flush with positivity, having successfully built a strong base of buzz for a prototype that was both visually and functionally striking. However, soon afterward, JOBY was sold and the new owners weren’t exactly enthusiastic about operating in the lighting retail space. Enter Kahane, who was not only enthusiastic about lighting, he owned a lighting distributor that became the new home for the Trapeze.

Why We Love Light & Contrast

It may be a one-product company, but that lone lamp is supremely cool. Extending his apparent aptitude for designing well-thought-out LED task lights (following the Link for Pablo Lighting and a co-design credit on the Horizon task light by Humanscale, Stathis one-ups himself with Trapeze. The lamp scoffs at old school lamping requirements like wiring, instead offering arms with 360° of seamless rotational fluidity via a patented electronically-conducive ball and socket design. Additionally, the ultra-thin LED flat panel packs 102 LEDs into its diminutive 6.2” head, allowing the impressive ability to illuminate large areas. Aesthetically, it’s a very fun fixture, with one of our favorite design flourishes being the bulbous counterweights that slyly evoke the shape of light bulbs.

Fun Facts About Light & Contrast

In addition to his innovative work enhancing the task worthiness of desk lamps, Stathis is also the principal designer for Pablo’s Tube Top family. Light and airy, the collection is primarily composed of acrylic bases and mesh fabric shades, offering options in all typologies.

Noteworthy Products from Light & Contrast

Have we told you about the Light & Contrast Trapeze LED Table Lamp? Okay, fine. But we just can’t diffuse our praise for this one. It’s truly that special. Just ask Marc D’Estout, curator at the Museum Of Craft and Design in San Francisco. In a recent SF Gate piece entitled “What Bay Area curators love in their own homes,” D’Estout referenced the Trapeze LED Table Lamp that resides on a living room end table in his San Francisco home.
