Hans J. Wegner

Hans J. Wegner

Hans J. Wegner is a Danish furniture designer often referred to as the master of the chair. Making about 500 designs in his lifetime, he is best known for the Wishbone chair—a staple of Danish modern design. With a deep respect for the characteristics of wood and other natural materials, he was able to bring about an organic softness to formalistic minimalism. Wegner was born in 1914 in Tønder, Prussia, now southern Denmark. He moved to Copenhagen and attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1936 to 1938. He started his own design studio in 1943 and created a series of chairs, including the Wishbone Chair, for Carl Hansen from 1949 until 1968. A multiple design award recipient, including the Lunning Prize in 1951, Sweden’s Prince Eugen Medal in 1961, the Danish Furniture Prize in 1980 and the 8th International Design Award in 1997, Wegner’s designs are featured in museums around the world and are still in production today. He died in 2007 at the age of 92.
