George Kovacs
The George Kovacs Story
George Kovacs was born 1926 in Vienna, Austria. After moving to the US, Kovacs was enticed in 1954 to market J.T. Kalmar lamps. Inspired by the success of that endeavor--and the observed popularity of such contemporary lighting--Kovacs expanded his lighting import and design business (with locations throughout New York).
Read MoreThroughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s, George Kovacs became a renowned lighting designer and collaborator. In 2000, Kovacs sold his company name to the Minka Group, continuing to design lighting for the company until his death in 2007. Today, the Minka Group offers Kovacs' celebrated assortment of pendants, chandeliers, track lighting fixtures, bath and vanity lights, sconces, portable floor and table lamps, and outdoor lighting.

George Kovacs was the man who first introduced America to the halogen torchiere floor lamp, in the early 1970s. The George Kovacs line is now part of the Minka Group, which also includes Metropolitan Lighting, Minka-Lavery and contemporary ceiling fans from Minka Aire.
