Scandinavian Chandeliers

Scandinavian style started at the end of World War II, when the Nordic countries of Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark were at the height of social democracy. Notable design elements of Scandinavian design include clean lines, functionality and evocative shapes drawn from nature. Scandinavian chandeliers showcase these features in a larger and elaborate silhouette as they hang from the ceiling. Scandinavian style, also called Nordic lighting, come from the same period as mid-century modern design, with the American equivalent somewhat sharing the same qualities. These chandeliers are designed to command the room by presenting a full layer of light to the entire space.

Other Considerations

Before purchasing any fixture, check the measurements of the piece and measure the room size to ensure it works well in the space. Because chandeliers are sometimes in grand sizes, it is important to give them plenty of room to breathe while providing the necessary layer of light. Measuring the height of the ceiling is important as well, so it is known how far down the chandelier will hang.

When the chandelier has been decided, look into other Scandinavian fixtures to continue the trend and theme in the home. To start, consider Scandinavian pendant lighting to bring a direct layer of light to the room. They can be mounted over a dining room table, in a foyer or over a kitchen counter and island either as single units, in a cluster, or in a linear arrangement. The versatility of pendant lights makes them a must-have for any decorated space.

Lighting is not just about the indoors, either. Once the interior of the home has been established, look into redoing the outdoors with Scandinavian furniture and Scandinavian outdoor lighting. The proper furniture and lighting outdoors will continue the trend from a cozy indoor space for gathering to a welcoming outdoor space suitable for larger crowds. For the lighting, check the location rating to see if the fixture can be in direct contact with water or only in the same vicinity of it. These ratings are called wet and damp ratings, respectively, and are of utmost importance for outdoor fixtures.
